about

“Stomping Ground” is about upper middle class suburbs as seen through a critical, but not overblown, perspective. The lyrics are stitched together like a patchwork of wry observations, most of which critique the insular nature of suburban privilege: “Partake in a group disease / The spreading chestnut tree / We make our wounds believe / They’ll turn to warm relief.” But the song doesn’t absolve anyone — including its singers — just for being able to recognize these short-comings; instead, it offers a bleacher-stomping chant: “There’s a whole world out of bounds / At the edge of the stomping ground / Getting lost is still allowed.” It’s more than a declaration of fact: it’s an invitation to come find out.
